Description
That sulfur smell when you turn on the hot tap isn’t something you have to live with. Hydrogen sulfide gas and dissolved iron ride in with well water (and some municipal supplies), and a plain carbon filter alone doesn’t last long against them. That’s exactly the job KDF85 was made for.
What’s happening inside the tank
This is a two-stage bed in a single tank. Incoming water hits the KDF85 Media Guard first — a high-purity copper-zinc redox media that converts hydrogen sulfide and precipitates iron, taking up to 99% of both out of play. The water then works down through 1.5 cubic feet of coconut shell carbon, which grabs chlorine, chloramines, pesticides, and dissolved organics.
The layering isn’t cosmetic: because KDF85 shoulders the iron, sulfur, and chlorine load up front, the carbon underneath can last several times longer than it would alone. KDF is also bacteriostatic — it discourages bacteria, algae, and mold from setting up inside the media bed between backwashes.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Tank | FRB mineral tank, 10″ x 54″ |
| Carbon | 1.5 cu ft coconut shell GAC, pre-loaded |
| Guard media | KDF85 Media Guard, pre-installed |
| Reduces | Iron & hydrogen sulfide (up to 99% via KDF85), sulfur odor, chlorine, chloramines, chemicals, heavy metals |
| Valve | Fleck 5600 with programmable automatic backwash; keeps settings ~1 year through outages |
| Connection | 1″ in/out (tell us if you need 3/4″) |
| Sized for | 2–3 bathroom homes |
| Salt / chemicals needed | None — runs as a salt-free standalone |
Where it fits in your setup
Run it standalone as a salt-free whole house filter, or put it ahead of a softener — with the chlorine and sediment stripped out first, softener resin lasts noticeably longer. Well water with very heavy iron staining? Send us a water test before ordering; past a certain iron level a dedicated iron filter is the honest recommendation, and we’d rather tell you that up front.
Smaller city-water household? The compact 1 cu ft KDF55 chlorine system costs less and targets exactly what municipal water needs. Running 3+ bathrooms or a big family? Step up to the 2 cu ft KDF85 large-home system.
What ships to your door
One FRB 10″x54″ tank, the Fleck 5600 automatic valve, KDF85 Media Guard already seated in the tank, and 1.5 cu ft of carbon already loaded — we do the messy media pour here so you don’t have to funnel 50 pounds of carbon in your garage. Connect the 1″ fittings, set the backwash schedule, done.
Before you buy
Will it completely get rid of the rotten-egg smell?
For typical hydrogen sulfide levels, yes — KDF85’s 99% reduction is the difference you smell on day one. Extremely high sulfide wells may need aeration first; call us with your numbers.
What’s the difference between KDF85 and KDF55?
KDF85 is formulated for iron and hydrogen sulfide — the well-water problems. KDF55 (in our smaller unit) is the chlorine specialist for city water. Same redox principle, different targets.
