Description
Big households are hard on water filters. Three teenagers showering back-to-back, a dishwasher and washing machine running at once — an undersized carbon bed gets overwhelmed and starts letting tastes and odors through long before its time. This unit carries double the carbon of our entry system precisely so it doesn’t.
Built for volume
Two full cubic feet of coconut shell GAC means more contact time between your water and the media even at high draw — and contact time is what actually determines how clean the water leaving the tank is. Up top, the pre-installed KDF85 Media Guard does the front-line work: up to 99% reduction of iron and hydrogen sulfide, so the sulfur smell and orange staining stop at the tank, and the carbon below stays fresh for the chlorine, chloramine, and chemical load.

Who should buy this size — and who shouldn’t
This is the right call for 3–5 bathroom homes, multi-generational households, and small businesses where a bar sink, dish station, or salon chairs run all day. If you’ve got one or two bathrooms on city water, don’t overspend — the 1 cu ft KDF55 city-water unit will serve you well for less. Mid-size home on a well? The 1.5 cu ft KDF85 well-water system is the sweet spot.
Arrives ready to plumb
Fleck 5600 timer valve, 12″x52″ FRB tank with the KDF85 guard seated and all 2 cubic feet of carbon already inside. At this size that’s roughly 60+ pounds of media you won’t be funneling yourself — one of the quiet perks of buying from a shop that hand-builds these. Connect the 1″ in/out, program the backwash, open the bypass.
Good to know
Can it supply a small restaurant or salon?
Yes — this size is our usual recommendation for light commercial use. For anything bigger (multiple dish stations, high constant draw), call us and we’ll spec a commercial build instead.
Will five people showering drop the pressure?
The full 1″ plumbing path and large bed are chosen to keep flow restriction minimal at household peaks. Keep the 1″ bypass unless your existing plumbing is 3/4″.
How long does the carbon last at heavy usage?
Depends on your water and draw, but the KDF85 layer extends carbon life several-fold by absorbing the chlorine and sulfur load first. Figure years, not months.
Can I add a softener later?
Absolutely — this unit ahead of a softener is our favorite pairing. Dechlorinated water is much gentler on softener resin.
Like every system we sell, it’s assembled and pressure-tested by hand before shipping. Want a second opinion on sizing? Call 951-332-7443 with your bathroom count and water source — takes five minutes.
