How this system cleans up city water
Water enters the tank and passes first through the KDF55 Media Guard, then down through a full cubic foot of coconut shell carbon. Between the two, you get:

Is this the right size?

You want its bigger sibling — the 1.5 cu ft KDF85 system for well water — because KDF85 is the iron-and-sulfur specialist, while KDF55 here is tuned for chlorine.
What’s included in the box
Fleck 5600 timer valve, 9″x48″ mineral tank with carbon pre-loaded and KDF55 pre-installed, and the bypass valve. We load the media here in our shop before shipping, so setup is plumbing the in/out and setting the backwash clock — most installs wrap up in an afternoon.
Straight answers
Does this soften hard water?
No — carbon handles taste, odor, and chemicals, not hardness minerals. Plenty of customers run it ahead of a softener; the chlorine removal actually protects the softener’s resin.
How often does it backwash?
You program it on the Fleck 5600 valve — typically every few days at 2 a.m. It rinses and re-settles the carbon bed automatically. No salt, no chemicals, no cartridges.
Will it fit in a garage closet?
The tank stands 48″ plus the valve on top — measure for roughly 60″ of clearance **[verify exact height with valve]** and access to a drain for backwash water.
