Why Catalytic Carbon (Not Standard Carbon)
Many water utilities have switched from chlorine to chloramine as a disinfectant because it’s more stable and produces fewer disinfection byproducts. The catch is that chloramine is genuinely harder to filter out — standard granular activated carbon has limited capacity for it. This system uses 12×40 mesh catalytic, high-activity granular activated carbon, made by steam-activating select coconut shell charcoal, specifically because it has a much stronger catalytic action than standard carbon. That catalytic property is what makes it effective against chloramine and hydrogen sulfide, not just chlorine and taste.
The large micropore volume of this carbon also targets low molecular weight organic compounds and their chlorinated byproducts — including chloroform and other trihalomethanes (THMs) — contaminants standard filters often miss entirely.

Simple In/Out Valve — No Backwashing Required
This system uses a straightforward in/out valve rather than an automatic backwash controller. Water flows in, passes through the 1.0 cu ft carbon bed, and flows out — no electricity, no drain line, nothing to program. It’s an inexpensive, low-maintenance setup that’s easy to install and easy to live with.
