Description
Acidic well water is quietly corrosive. It rarely announces itself until you notice blue-green staining around drains and fixtures, a metallic taste, or a plumber flagging pinhole leaks in your copper pipes. This 1/2 cubic foot bag of calcite is a naturally occurring calcium carbonate media built specifically to correct that — raising your water’s pH to a safer, non-corrosive level.
How It Works
As acidic water passes through the calcite bed, the media slowly dissolves, releasing calcium carbonate that neutralizes acidity and raises pH. This reduces the water’s tendency to leach copper, lead, and other metals out of your plumbing — the actual cause of staining and metallic taste. Calcite reacts at a controlled, slower rate compared to faster-acting media, which helps prevent overcorrecting your water’s pH.
Maintenance: Two Different Things
Periodic backwashing keeps the media bed loose and performing well — this is routine upkeep, not replacement. Separately, because calcite is consumed as it neutralizes acid, the bed level drops over time and needs replenishing, typically about once a year depending on your water’s pH, usage, and chemistry.
How Much Do You Need?
| Tank Size | Media Needed | Bags Required |
|---|---|---|
| 8″ x 44″ | 0.5 ft³ | 1 bag |
| 9″ x 48″ | 1 ft³ | 2 bags |
| 10″ x 54″ | 1.5 ft³ | 3 bags |
| 12″ x 48″ | 2 ft³ | 4 bags |
| 13″ x 54″ | 3 ft³ | 6 bags |
If you need more than 1/2 cubic foot, just increase the quantity in your cart. For example, for 1.5 cubic feet, set quantity to 3.
For Lower pH Water
Calcite works well for moderately acidic water. If your water’s pH runs lower, calcite is often blended with Corosex, which reacts faster and extends the effective correction range beyond what calcite handles on its own.
