Description
Advanced Filtration Technology: KDF-55 & Activated Carbon
Our whole house system utilizes a dual-stage filtration process to ensure the highest water quality. Below is the detailed breakdown of how our media protects your home.
1. KDF-55 Process (Redox Technology)
KDF-55 filter media consists of finely granulated copper and zinc alloys. The combination of these two alloys allows the chemical reaction of redox (Oxidation-Reduction) to take place as water passes through.
- How Redox Works: This involves the transfer of electrons between two molecules, changing them into entirely different elements.
- Contaminant Neutralization: Electrons are taken from harmful contaminants like chlorine and microorganisms, changing them into harmless elements. For example, chlorine is converted into harmless, water-soluble chloride.
- Targeted Removal: KDF-55 is specifically designed to reduce chlorine, heavy metals, and microbiological contaminants.
Why it matters: By using KDF-55 in the first stage, the life of the entire filter unit is greatly lengthened. It reduces scaling and bacterial growth, allowing the subsequent carbon stage to focus on more elusive contaminants.
2. 1.5 Cu. Ft. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)
Carbon is perhaps the most powerful absorbent known to man. One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can absorb thousands of different chemicals.
The Power of Coconut Shell Carbon
While coconut shell carbon typically costs 20% more than bituminous or wood types, it is generally regarded as the most effective. All of our filters use 100% coconut shell carbon.
Key Mechanisms of Carbon Filtration:
- Absorption: Organic compounds are trapped within the carbon’s massive surface area.
- Catalytic Reduction: An electro-positive charge draws in negatively-charged contaminant ions. This effectively removes residual disinfectants like chlorine and chloramines.
Efficiency Factors:
The efficiency of our 1.5 Cubic Ft. system depends on:
- Carbon Volume: The more carbon, the better the filtration.
- Contact Time: Lower flow rates allow more time for contaminants to be absorbed.
What Does This System Remove?
Our activated carbon filters are highly effective at reducing or removing:
- VOCs & Chemicals: Pesticides, herbicides, benzene, and solvents.
- Taste & Odor: Eliminates bad tastes and “swimming pool” smells from municipal water.
- Advanced Contaminants: Radon, trihalomethane (THM) compounds, and hundreds of other man-made chemicals.
- Pre-treatment: Ideal for protecting Reverse Osmosis membranes from fouling.
